BoxPlayer is an open-source media manager and streaming client that aggregates multiple cloud storage providers and media servers into a single interface. It serves as an alternative to proprietary cloud file managers by unifying access to services like Aliyun Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, and PikPak, while integrating with media servers such as Jellyfin, Emby, and Plex. The application allows users to treat disparate cloud storage accounts as a single, organized media library.

The application is built with Electron, TypeScript, and Vue 3, making it available for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Users can install it via platform-specific installers, such as .exe, .dmg, or .deb files, or run it as a portable application. It functions as both a file management tool and a media hub, allowing users to stream content directly from the cloud or manage local media libraries with metadata scraping.

Key features

  • Integration with Aliyun Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box, and WebDAV
  • Connection to Emby, Jellyfin, and Plex media servers
  • Automatic metadata scraping from TMDB for movies and TV shows
  • High-definition online playback with multi-track audio and external subtitle support
  • Integrated Aria2c engine for multi-threaded and remote downloads
  • Batch file operations including renaming and moving across cloud directories
  • Command line interface for automated file organization and AI agent integration
  • Support for external players including MPV and IINA

Beyond the graphical interface, the software includes a CLI tool called clouddrive-cli. This tool allows for advanced automation, such as generating renaming plans compatible with media server standards and performing dry-run validations before executing bulk changes. It also exposes these capabilities to AI clients like Claude Desktop and Cursor via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), enabling AI agents to search, list, and organize cloud files. The file manager also supports a folder tree view and can handle tens of thousands of files and folders simultaneously.

BoxPlayer is positioned as a comprehensive tool for users who maintain large media collections across various cloud platforms and require a centralized system for organization, automated maintenance, and high-quality playback.
