copyparty is an open-source, self-hosted file server that enables resumable uploads and downloads via web browsers. It allows users to turn almost any device into a storage node for sharing files and managing data across a network. The software is deployed as a server application requiring only Python to run, making it compatible with a wide variety of hardware environments from small home servers to larger machines.

Users interact with the server through a web-based file manager or via various network protocols. It supports a wide range of use cases, from simple file transfers and NAS frontends to hosting media libraries and e-book feeds. The server can be configured using command line arguments or configuration files, and it can be made accessible over the internet or restricted to a local area network using Zeroconf for service announcement.

Key features

  • Support for HTTP, HTTPS, WebDAV, SFTP, FTP, TFTP, and SMB/CIFS protocols
  • Resumable file uploads and downloads via any web browser
  • Built-in media player with audio equalizer and m3u8 playlist support
  • Markdown viewer and text file viewer with real-time streaming for logs

The application is designed for versatility, offering a browser-based UI with grid views and thumbnails alongside a CLI for uploads. It includes advanced server-side options such as symlink-based deduplication, periodic filesystem rescanning, and event hooks to trigger external programs upon file uploads. Authentication can be handled via passwords, IP range restrictions, or external identity providers using OAuth. For mobile users, the software provides a dedicated Android app and supports iOS shortcuts to facilitate quick uploads from mobile devices.

copyparty serves as a portable utility for users needing a flexible file server with broad protocol support and a functional web interface.
