Dawarich is a self-hosted web application for tracking and visualizing location history. It allows users to maintain a personal record of their movements, organize travel data into specific trips, and analyze spatial statistics over time. The software provides a centralized hub for managing geospatial data without relying on external cloud providers for history storage.

The software is deployed as a server, typically using Docker Compose for local installation. It functions by receiving live location updates from various mobile clients or by importing existing historical datasets. Once the data is ingested, the application renders the movements on an interactive map interface with several viewing modes to help users understand their travel patterns.

Key features

  • Map visualization with heatmap, points, lines, and fog of war layers
  • Integration with Immich and Photoprism to visualize geotagged photos
  • Location sharing with family members based on individual consent
  • Travel statistics including distance traveled and countries visited
  • Trip management with route visualization and personal notes
  • Data import from Google Maps Timeline, OwnTracks, Strava, and GPX/GeoJSON files
  • Automated visit suggestions based on user-defined map areas
  • Export capabilities for data in GeoJSON and GPX formats

Dawarich supports a wide range of location tracking sources to ensure data continuity. Users can utilize dedicated Dawarich apps for iOS and Android, or integrate third party tools such as OwnTracks, GPSLogger, PhoneTrack, and Home Assistant. The architecture focuses on data ownership and flexibility, allowing users to import EXIF data from photos to fill gaps in their location history. It also includes specific tools for tracking tax residency by calculating the exact number of days spent in each country, alongside an insights engine that identifies the most visited locations.

This application is designed for individuals and families who want to maintain a private, self-managed archive of their global movements and travel memories.
