Harmonoid is an open-source web app and server that focuses on playing and managing local music libraries. It serves as a cross-platform media player available for Windows, GNU/Linux, macOS, and Android. The application is designed to handle large libraries with a focus on consistent visual design and low system resource consumption, providing a unified experience across different hardware environments.

The software is built using the Flutter framework and utilizes the libmpv backend for audio playback. It supports a wide range of operating systems, including older versions such as Android 5.0 and macOS 10.15, ensuring accessibility for users with legacy hardware. Users can install it as a standard application or run it as a portable version on desktop platforms to avoid system-wide installation.

Key features

  • Material Design 3 and 2 interface with light and dark themes
  • Support for LRC files, embedded tags, and online lyrics
  • Gapless playback with crossfade and ReplayGain support
  • Integrated tag editor with support for multiple artists and genres
  • Speed and pitch adjustment with volume boost options
  • Last.fm and Discord RPC integrations
  • Exclusive audio mode for higher fidelity playback
  • Fallback cover art support for common filenames like cover.jpg
  • System media controls for Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android

Because it uses the mpv backend, Harmonoid supports a broad array of audio formats and provides a performant tag reader for organizing metadata. The application integrates with native OS controls, such as D-Bus MPRIS on Linux and MPNowPlayingInfoCenter on macOS, to allow playback management from the system tray or lock screen. On Windows, it includes Taskbar Thumbnail Toolbar support. It maintains a small installation footprint of approximately 35 MB and typically uses around 150 MB of RAM, making it suitable for machines with limited memory.

Harmonoid is a modern, lightweight local music manager for users who prefer a strict Material Design aesthetic and high performance over Electron-based players.
