Lemmy is an open-source, self-hosted link aggregator and forum where users subscribe to specific communities, post links or discussions, and interact through voting and commenting. The software is deployed as a server and accessed via a web interface, providing a decentralized space for public discourse.

Unlike centralized platforms, Lemmy uses a federated model, allowing different servers to connect and share content. This architecture enables a user registered on one server to subscribe to forums and interact with users hosted on entirely different servers, similar to how email works. This removes the reliance on a single corporate entity to manage the entire network of communities.

Key features

  • Federation support via the Fediverse for cross-server interaction
  • Server implementation written in Rust with arm64 and Raspberry Pi support
  • Deployment options using Docker and Ansible
  • Integrated image uploading for posts and comments
  • RSS and Atom feeds for users, communities, and subscriptions
  • Public moderation logs with tools to lock, remove, or restore content
  • Private messaging and email notifications for tags and replies
  • Support for NSFW content flagging and community-specific moderation

Lemmy is designed for users and administrators who want to move away from corporate control of social discussions. The system provides granular moderation tools, allowing site admins and community moderators to manage trolls and set local policies. It supports internationalization and offers a mobile-friendly interface with multiple themes, including light, dark, and solarized options. Users can sign up with only a username and password, and the platform includes a similar post search to help prevent duplicate questions in Q&A communities.

From a technical perspective, the use of Rust ensures high performance for the server side. The platform also allows users to fully erase their data by replacing all posts and comments, ensuring a level of data sovereignty.

It serves as a decentralized infrastructure for community-led discussion and news aggregation.
