OpenClaw is an open-source, self-hosted application that functions as a personal AI assistant. It connects to existing chat applications to handle tasks and communicate across various platforms. The software is deployed as a server-side gateway that manages sessions, tools, and events, and can be installed via a CLI on macOS, Linux, and Windows.

Users interact with the assistant through a wide array of supported channels, including WhatsApp, Telegram, Slack, Discord, Signal, and iMessage. It supports voice interaction on mobile devices and provides a visual workspace for agent-driven tasks. The system can be run as a background daemon to ensure the assistant remains always-on and responsive across all connected surfaces.

Key features

  • Multi-channel inbox supporting over 20 platforms including Matrix, Teams, and WeChat
  • Local-first Gateway for centralized control of sessions and tools
  • Voice Wake and Talk mode for macOS, iOS, and Android
  • Live Canvas for agent-driven visual workspaces
  • Multi-agent routing to isolate different accounts or peers into separate workspaces
  • Sandbox mode using Docker, SSH, or OpenShell to secure non-main sessions
  • Integrated tools for browser access, cron jobs, and session history
  • Companion apps for Windows Hub and macOS menu bar control

The architecture relies on a Gateway that acts as the control plane, routing messages between the user's chosen channels and the AI model. It supports flagship models from providers like OpenAI. For security, the software implements a DM pairing policy where unknown senders must be approved via a pairing code before the assistant processes their messages. This prevents untrusted input from triggering tools on the host system. The system is designed for single users who want to maintain control over their data while automating tasks across multiple communication apps.

Additional functionality is provided through optional nodes. The iOS and Android nodes pair over a WebSocket to the Gateway, enabling camera access, screen capture, and device command families. Windows users can utilize a native Hub companion app for tray status and local MCP mode. The software is intended for users who require a highly customizable, private assistant that integrates directly into their existing digital communication workflow.

OpenClaw is a local-first assistant for users who prefer self-hosting their AI orchestration layer.
