Part-DB is an open-source inventory management system designed specifically for electronic components. It is installed on a web server and accessed via a browser, which removes the need for local software installations on client machines and allows for centralized access across a network.

The application allows users to track electronic parts, manage storage locations, and organize components using categories, footprints, and tags. It is used for maintaining private inventories for hobbyists, managing shared resources in maker spaces, or handling professional component tracking in universities and small companies.

Key features

  • Parametric search and filtering to find parts based on specific technical specifications
  • Bill of Materials (BOM) management with support for KiCad imports and project tracking
  • Barcode and label generation with a built-in webcam scanner for inventory updates
  • User management with granular permissions and two-factor authentication
  • Automated data retrieval for prices and datasheets from providers like Digikey and Octopart
  • Integration with KiCad to use the database as a central data source within the EDA tool
  • Support for multiple database backends including MySQL, PostgreSQL, and SQLite
  • Event logging to track inventory changes and revert parts to previous versions

Built with the Symfony framework and PHP, the system includes an API for integration with other scripts and applications. It supports single sign-on via SAML and can connect to LDAP or Active Directory servers through intermediate services like Keycloak. The interface is responsive, allowing access from desktops, tablets, and smartphones using the same interface. To assist with data entry, a browser plugin is available to submit parts directly from shop websites, utilizing either structured metadata or AI based extraction to bypass manual entry.

Part-DB serves as a centralized repository for electronic hardware assets, focusing on the specific needs of electronics engineers and hobbyists who require detailed tracking of technical specifications and stock levels.
