Pluton

A self-hosted backup management platform that automates encrypted incremental backups to over 70 cloud storage providers.

Pluton is an open-source, self-hosted web app and server that manages automated incremental backups. It provides a centralized web interface to coordinate data protection across various storage destinations, allowing users to maintain full control over their backup infrastructure and avoid vendor lock-in. The platform is designed to simplify the process of securing data by wrapping complex command line tools in a graphical user interface.

The software is deployed as a server application and can be installed on Windows, macOS, and Linux desktops, as well as headless Linux servers. For users preferring containerized environments, it is available as a Docker image and can be deployed using a Docker Compose configuration. This flexibility allows the software to be hosted on a dedicated home server or a remote virtual private server.

Key features

  • Automated incremental backups with encryption and compression
  • Support for over 70 cloud storage providers via Rclone
  • Backup replication to multiple destinations for 3-2-1 backup strategies
  • Custom scheduling and fine-grained retention policies
  • End-to-end encryption from the local machine to cloud storage
  • Event notifications via Email, Slack, Discord, and NTFY
  • Ability to execute custom scripts before and after backup jobs
  • Real-time progress tracking and integrated application logging

Pluton acts as a management layer that integrates Restic for secure backup operations and Rclone for cloud connectivity. This architecture allows it to handle diverse storage backends while maintaining a consistent user interface for restoring or downloading snapshot data. The system includes auto-retry logic for failed jobs to ensure data consistency and allows administrators to configure concurrent backup limits and session durations through environment variables. Users can mount host directories or Docker volumes directly to the application to define the specific data sources that require protection.

It is designed for users who require a centralized interface to manage encrypted backups across multiple cloud providers while maintaining a self-hosted security posture.
