Tabularis is an open-source desktop SQL workspace. It supports PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, and SQLite out of the box, while extending its reach to databases such as DuckDB, ClickHouse, Redis, and Firestore through a plugin system. The application is cross-platform and available for Windows, macOS, and Linux.

The software combines a traditional database client with a notebook interface and AI integration. It allows users to manage database connections, write and execute queries, and visualize complex data structures. Installation is handled via WinGet, Homebrew, Snap, Flatpak, or direct installers, and the user interface is available in multiple languages including English, Spanish, and Chinese.

Key features

  • SQL notebooks with mixed SQL and Markdown cells and integrated bar, line, and pie charts
  • Built-in MCP server for integration with AI agents like Claude, Cursor, and Devin
  • Interactive ER diagrams for visualizing database relationships with pan and zoom
  • Visual EXPLAIN tool that converts execution plans into navigable node graphs
  • Visual query builder using a drag-and-drop interface to generate real-time SQL
  • Local AI text-to-SQL capabilities using Ollama to avoid cloud-based dependencies
  • Support for SSH tunneling with automatic readiness detection for secure connections
  • Plugin system allowing extensions written in any language via JSON-RPC over stdio

Built with Tauri, Rust, and TypeScript, Tabularis uses the Monaco Editor for its SQL interface, providing syntax highlighting and auto-completion. It is designed for data engineers and developers who require a mix of manual query authoring and AI-assisted exploration. The tool emphasizes a modular architecture where most database drivers are implemented as plugins, allowing the core application to remain lightweight while supporting a wide variety of data sources including Google Sheets and CSV folders.

Tabularis prioritizes a modern feature set like notebooks and AI agents over a massive list of legacy drivers.
