Tuwunel

Tuwunel is an open-source, self-hosted Matrix homeserver written in Rust. It provides the backend infrastructure necessary to host decentralized communication, allowing users to connect via Matrix-compatible clients, bots, and bridges. The software is designed to be a scalable and low-cost solution for communication infrastructure, implementing the Matrix Specification for the vast majority of standard use cases.

The server can be deployed in several ways to suit different environment needs. It is available via Docker images, static binaries, and a wide variety of distribution packages including Debian, RPM, Arch, Alpine, and NixOS. For those using automated configuration management, an Ansible playbook is available via matrix-docker-ansible-deploy. Users can manage network traffic using a reverse proxy like Caddy for automated TLS renewal or configure the server to load TLS certificates directly for a standalone deployment.

Tuwunel serves as the official successor to conduwuit and is designed to handle the transition through binary swaps or database reconciliation on first boot. It is developed for use in both community and enterprise environments and is currently deployed by the government of Switzerland for its citizens. The architecture focuses on resource efficiency and stability, utilizing Rust to ensure high performance. The project maintains a tiered release system with different tracking tags, allowing administrators to choose between the stable latest tag, a preview tag for high-confidence updates, or the main branch for the most frequent updates.
