XBackBone is a self-hosted file and media sharing platform designed for uploading and distributing images, videos, audio, PDFs, and code. The application provides short links with social embeds and is deployed as a web server. It is built using Laravel and Livewire, providing a lightweight environment for managing digital assets and distributing them via a modern web interface.

Users can upload files through a browser or via various third party integrations. The system manages these assets through a central dashboard that includes multi-user support and a versioned REST API for programmatic access. It supports a wide range of file types, including GIFs and arbitrary binary files, ensuring that users can host diverse content types on their own infrastructure.

Key features

  • Integrations for ShareX, ScreenCloud, ishare, Spectacle, and macOS Share sheet
  • Inline previews for images, video, audio waveforms, PDFs, and syntax-highlighted code
  • Storage backends including local disk, Amazon S3, FTP, and SFTP
  • Content-addressed storage for automatic file de-duplication
  • Private and public upload visibility with password protection and expiration
  • Two-factor authentication via TOTP and passkeys using WebAuthn
  • User management with admin roles, disk quotas, and usage statistics
  • In-app updates and a guided web installer for browser-based setup

The software uses a monorepo architecture where the core application logic is maintained as a Composer package. This specific structure allows administrators to upgrade or downgrade the application version by changing the required version of the core package without modifying the deployment skeleton. It includes a searchable activity log for auditing account and admin actions, as well as feature flags to toggle sign-ups and themes without requiring a redeployment of the server. The system also includes a legacy import tool to migrate users and uploads from previous versions while maintaining link transparency.

XBackBone is intended for users who require a private, lightweight infrastructure for hosting and sharing media files with granular control over storage and user access.
